A combustible look from across the space, into these coal-black eyes. Things that smoulder never truly burn out, and in the fourth and final SPACE|ACTION investiture, the experimental vocalist and modular synthesist duo Sumn Conduit, Sonya Holowell and Ben Carey, lock eyes with the concentrated fluidity of movement artist Victoria Hunt. A backdrop of cosmic genesis and heavenly gates conjures like a fire grill upon the Phoenix expanse by the visionary projection artist Carla Zimbler, while oxygen and enervating breath stokes the pile through the auditory waves of synth master Nicholas Meredith. Hold this gaze, don't look away.
“SMOULDER embodies a shifting environment through three connected yet disparate modes of improvised performance: sound, animation and movement. Inside Phoenix’s walls, time is elongated and oxygen is decreased. A fragile ember hovers in liminal space, shrouded by ash. Oscillations and distortions envelop a suspended moment, a warped haze of heat blurring the borderlines of reality. These undulations suggest a landscape born of trauma - burning, decaying and regenerating. SMOULDER floods Phoenix with the intense, suppressed emotions that saturate the aftermath of fire and calls for resilience, protection and kinship.”
