700 Feel + Ryan Fennis & Voidhood
17 April 2024
The crossover of rap and rave is proving to be among the most vital intersections of Australian underground and this double bill of duos will surely give you a taste. Sydney-based new generation electronic duo 700 Feel, fresh off the back of their Powerhouse Museum Generations Fellowship, will perform an invigorating set that melds UK garage with hip hop, dub and house. Taking us deeper into the night will be Ryan Fennis & Voidhood. As stalwarts of Melbourne’s forward-thinking CONTENT.NET.AU label, expect a performance that locates the limits of sub bass, reverb-drenched raps and gritty production.
700 Feel
700 Feel are a Sydney-based electronic duo comprised of Jonny Hawkins and Juan Villamor who bring together UK garage, hip hop, dub and house with subtle shadings of footwork and jazz interspersed throughout. Together, they channel the organic electronica of Four Tet, the shuffling production of Jamie xx and Nicolás Jaar’s ability to move from ambient soundscapes to bass-heavy club beats and back again. Threading together London, Chicago, Kingston, Bristol and Sydney, these musical threads all come together in the meeting point of 700 Feel.
Despite possessing a sound pieced together from around the globe, 700 Feel ground their project very firmly in their Australian roots of Sydney. Energised by community and collectivism, they find inspiration in their surroundings and the people and stories that populate the city, with their debut AA-side T1 Western / Back 2 The Area centred on that feeling of coming home. Filtered through the perspectives of two migrant kids growing up on the outskirts of Sydney, 700 Feel is an authentic, affectionate homage to the melting pot of the area, the kind of exchange of ideas and culture that could’ve only happened there.
Ryan Fennis & Voidhood
Ryan Fennis & Voidhood are two artists from Canberra now operating in the Naarm/Melbourne underground. Their latest album EXTENDER pushes the duo’s respective sounds into new territory, pulling in elements of industrial, experimental hip-hop, club and left-field punk - creating an otherworldly sonic experience. It is a reflection on the ‘age of overstimulation,’ drawing from Fennis & Voidhood’s experiences of digital immersion and navigating present-day dystopias.
FBi Radio selected it as Album of the Week and wrote “Stretching the limits of electronic hip-hop and industrial club sounds, [EXTENDER] mirrors the ever-increasing rapidity of music culture, online worlds, and dystopic creep…As much as EXTENDER is a struggle with a world slipping increasingly out of control, it is also a show of valiance, of extending beyond oneself to create something better.”
Fennis & Voidhood are members of the burgeoning artist collective and self-described “thriving ecosystem” CONTENT.NET.AU. Representing sounds at the intersection of rap, club and electronic, they are focused on reaching beyond current systems and structures and building community through their music.
This performance is part of the 24th Biennale of Sydney, Ten Thousand Suns.
This performance will take place at the NSW State Heritage-listed White Bay Power Station, as part of the 24th Biennale of Sydney.
Placemaking NSW has undertaken extensive remediation and conservation works to repurpose White Bay Power Station as an arts, cultural and community hub. It will become a focal point for the transformation of the Bays West precinct into a connected and vibrant new area for living, working and recreation.
White Bay Power Station was constructed between 1912 and 1917 to power the rail network and is now over 100 years old. It is exceptionally significant as the only power station retaining machinery and equipment from before the 1950s, demonstrating the process of electricity production and its use throughout Sydney’s extensive rail network.
