Ambient Delights
14 December 2025
Ambient Delights features pianist Brieley Cutting with musicians Dan Lopez (violin), Eleanor Streatfeild (cello), Luke Spicer (viola), Bonita Han-Williams (double bass) and composer/live electronics performer Mark Oliveiro.
Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major takes its nickname from the integration of the vibe and material from one of Schubert’s own art songs, Die Forelle (The Trout). It was conceived in 1819 when Schubert was 22 years old and on holiday in the countryside of Austria at a place he described as "inconceivably beautiful”. Reflecting a lightness and carefreeness, the sound world of this Quintet conjures up sounds of running water and the wriggling of a trout, with beautiful transparency of texture and infectious melodies.
Mark Oliveiro’s Electronic Suite for piano quartet with live generative electronics will receive its world premiere at this concert. A three-movement journey, this work blurs the line between acoustic intimacy and digital intervention, exploring how acoustic and electronic voices can collide, diverge and ultimately converge - transforming contrast into coherence.
-
SPEL x Connor D'Netto
13 December 2025
Vocalist Louisa Rankin and clarinettist Jason Noble come together as SPEL, a duo exploring the curious and abstract corners of fragile, playful, improvisatory music making. Louisa and Jason are joined by composer/producer Connor D’Netto for a trio performance expanding and contorting SPEL’s sound world with modular synthesisers and live electronic manipulation. Between, hear the world premiere of Connor’s Some Kinda Way, a three-movement work composed for Jason in which his solo clarinet line floats above and weaves through ten pre-recorded layers of himself. To begin the evening, Jason performs Steve Reich’s iconic piece for the same layered setup, New York Counterpoint.
-
Matt Withers x Alex Raineri
7 December 2025
Composed by Natalie Nicolas, Peaceful Moments was born from a visit to Westmead Children's Hospital—not to observe the children, but to understand the needs of the staff. What Natalie saw was healthcare workers stretched to their limits, their nervous systems in a constant state of fight or flight. The idea of adding music to their environment, even in break spaces, felt overwhelming to them—one more stimulus in an already overstimulated world. Since COVID, life for patients has largely returned to normal, but for healthcare workers, the pressures remain as intense as ever.
Peaceful Moments was performed at The Church by Matt Withers and Alex Raineri.
