Lupa J + Dyan Tai

20 March 2024

Join us for a radiant evening of queer virtuosity and aesthetically rigorous electronic pop from two of Australia’s most striking and performative multi-disciplinary acts.

Lupa J

Lupa J burst onto the Australian music scene at age 15, immediately garnering praise from international music blogs such as DIY Magazine – receiving a triple j Unearthed High nomination for two years running. After a few years solidifying their original electro-pop sound & live show with the likes of Sarah Blasko, Grimes, Tegan & Sara and Alice Glass, they released their debut LP Swallow Me Whole in 2019. A bold, self-produced record about discovering and celebrating their own queerness, it earned a nomination for the Australian Music Prize and FBi Radio’s SMAC Awards for ‘Album of the Year’.

In 2022, Lupa released their LP A New Kind of Magic. The album received high praise from presenters at BBC Radio 1 and triple j, with Tommy Faith from triple j calling ‘Always Wanting’ a ‘near perfect pop song’ & Declan Byrne insisting they should be playing ‘festivals all around Australia’. They have now cultivated a loyal, community-like fan base around them in Melbourne, playing a packed album launch event at Miscellania, and sets at Dark Mofo 2022, Gaytimes, Brisbane Powerhouse with Nakhane, the National Portrait Gallery, and Now or Never with Alice Longyu Gao.

Dyan Tai

Self-described as the "Gaysian empress of Sydney", Dyan Tai (he/they) has emerged from the local cabaret scene and now evolved into an electronic artist. Praised by Flume as “sound-designey and weird” (triple j Unfinished: Flume), Dyan sonically fuses Asiatic soundscapes with experimental art-pop. The trilingual, Chinese-Australian artist was also part of APRA/AMCOS's Pride Songhubs curated by Troye Sivan and will be debuting his first multidisciplinary audiovisual live show later in 2023.

This performance is part of the 24th Biennale of Sydney, Ten Thousand Suns.

This performance will take place at the NSW State Heritage-listed White Bay Power Station, as part of the 24th Biennale of Sydney.

Placemaking NSW has undertaken extensive remediation and conservation works to repurpose White Bay Power Station as an arts, cultural and community hub. It will become a focal point for the transformation of the Bays West precinct into a connected and vibrant new area for living, working and recreation.

White Bay Power Station was constructed between 1912 and 1917 to power the rail network and is now over 100 years old. It is exceptionally significant as the only power station retaining machinery and equipment from before the 1950s, demonstrating the process of electricity production and its use throughout Sydney’s extensive rail network.
