Yirinda — "Yuangan (Dugong)" | Live at Phoenix

Episode 52 of Live at Phoenix sees Yirinda take to Phoenix Central Park for a deeply moving, and at times unsettling, live recording of "Yuangan (Dugong)" under the direction of Michael Hili.

A project between Butchulla Songman Fred Leone and musical polymath Samuel Pankhurst, Yirinda unite an ancient Aboriginal language with sublime modern production to invoke thousands of generations of story and culture, whilst emerging as something entirely new.

"I rarely hear music that sparks an immediate cinematic vision, but Yirinda's music was an exception—ancient and contemporary forces colliding to create something profoundly evocative," says director Michael Hili. "Choosing to capture the live performance with thermal cameras felt perfectly attuned to its archaeological soul, unearthing unseen elements and hidden artifacts. At the same time, the imagery spoke to the eyes of surveillance, of being observed from an unfeeling distance."
