CORIN — Elegy / Postlude
The music of CORIN is something truly special: dark, mysterious, uncanny but inviting, with world-building and imagination at its core. A producer, composer and performer spanning multiple disciplines, Corin Ileto jumps between performance art, sound design, theatre and club spaces. Her performance for Season V at Phoenix merged some of these, returning to her roots in piano as she improvised on the Fazioli amidst vast, otherworldly soundscapes that washed through The Nest like a warm wind.
Director Hyun Lee uniquely captures her performance with a slow-burning film examining The Nest through a sci-fi lens, creating a mechanical dystopia as the Halo lowers itself up and down, breathing, surrounding Corin while a glowing sun orbits. Trapped inside, she performs an adaptation of 'Elegy' from her 2021 EP 'Araw', a lamenting reflection on grief and mourning that slowly dissipates into a ‘return to dust’.
Corin writes “Architecture interests me from a sound design point of view, so I was inspired by the minimalist futurist architecture of Phoenix. The ceiling looks like celestial topography. What Hyun’s been able to produce is so beautiful; reminiscent of scenes I adore from Blade Runner 2049 and Gattaca.”
Hyun Lee adds “Corin described her two pieces to us as a kind of sunrise and sunset, and we used this as a starting point to develop a visual idea to reflect her music. Dimitri and I were inspired by an artwork called The Weather Project by Olafur Eliasson and we tried to recreate its massive glowing sun. Instead of Eliasson's setting of the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, we had the enormous cave-like interior of Phoenix Central Park which transformed into an outer space landscape once we added movement to the sun.”
