Turkish born, Sydney based composer and handpan player Baran combines melodies and rhythms of the Middle East and Africa with Western idioms.

The handpan was invented in the 1970s by Swiss artists Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. The two steelpan makers chose to call the new instrument “Hang” meaning “hand” in Bernese German.
