x/o

14 Nov 2023

x/o is Veron Xio; the Vietnamese-Canadian electronic music producer, performer and multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver. Focusing on disrupting gender binaries through audiovisual storytelling, x/o uses hyper-feminine/masculine tropes and butterfly evolution allegories to build new worlds exploring nuances in duality and cyclical emotions.

In 2022, five years after releasing their debut EP 'Cocoon Egg' on experimental UK label Quantum Natives, x/o follows up with their sequel, Chaos Butterfly on the Berlin-based label Precious Metals. The project is an epic tale of catharsis and self-actualization explored through metamorphosis. It is a free-falling kaleidoscopic journey into a beautiful nightmare, both cataclysmic and tender with critics describing it as:

“...nu-metal and trip-hop influenced, experimental-leaning sounds within...haunting Evanescence-style vocals and jungle-influenced percussion…This is a multi-dimensional release.” – Resident Advisor

“...the breakthrough of hard-hitting and ethereal.” – Still Listening

“...end-of-level boss energy.” – Loud & Quiet

x/o has presented work internationally, (incl. Listen Festival (Brussels), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Berghain (Berlin), and MUTEK Montreal) and in 2019 was selected for the MUTEK Amplify residency at Somerset House Studios UK, as well as Red Bull Bass Camp Calgary at the National Music Centre.

They have previously released a string of singles, remixes, and collaborations, working with various artists including Rui Ho, City, and Team Rockit from the Yung Lean affiliated label, YEAR0001. They have also performed on supporting lineups for artists such as Chino Amobi, Elysia Crampton, M.E.S.H., and Jlin.
