Bram de Looze

9 May 2024

Bram De Looze (BE) is always on the lookout for new options, detours and possibilities to expand his own sound.

He earned his bachelor's in jazz piano from the Lemmensinstituut in two years and a master’s from the Artesis Conservatory in Antwerp in one. With a scholarship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation, he studied at the New School for Jazz in New York under renowned musicians. In 2007, he formed LABtrio, and by 2014, he'd launched Septych, producing notable works. One highlight was the formation of his trio in 2019 with Joey Baron, titled MiXMONK. Recently, he initiated Vice Versa, collaborating with renowned drummer Eric Mc Pherson and Berlin bassist Felix Henkelhausen.

Besides solidifying the ever-expanding group of like-minded musicians, De Looze also set out on a solo trajectory, and hardly a regular one. After paying a visit to Chris Maene’s collection of pianofortes, De Looze started a project using three such instruments, approaching their historical position from a contemporary viewpoint. The resulting album “Piano e Forte” (2016) and accompanying tour were met with rave reviews. Two years later, he recorded “Switch The Stream” with the revolutionary Chris Maene Straight Strung Grand Piano, once again allowing him to combine historical roots with modern techniques and perspectives. After that came “Colour Talk” (2020). An album that introduces a Straight Strung Grand Piano, the next step in the merger of sound, conception, and design.

His latest solo album “Spotting Gateways” is built around an eternal challenge and personal aim while creating music: daring to keep the music open enough in the moment itself and stay close and connect to the higher potential it can offer. “Spotting Gateways” was released January 19 on Dox Records.
