KIAZMA
9 September 2025
With an opening performance from Callisto.
Described as “masterful”, “positively ecstatic” and “profoundly moving, subtle and exuberant”, the KIAZMA Piano Duo (pianists Aura Go and Tomoe Kawabata) has established itself as one of Australia's most dynamic ensembles. Equally at home in solo, two-piano and four-hand repertoire from the baroque to the present day, KIAZMA is passionate about sharing the riches of the existing repertoire, developing the art form through the KIAZMA commissioning project, and creating concert experiences that explore new ways of listening to and engaging with music.
The duo's first CD, 'Five Rocks in a Japanese Garden', features first recordings of works by five of Japan’s foremost contemporary composers. KIAZMA has presented concert series at the Melbourne Recital Centre since 2016 and has undertaken ambitious projects such as a reimagining for two pianists of J.S. Bach’s 'The Art of Fugue' and the creation of a new interdisciplinary work 'One Space One'.
Aura Go performs across the globe as concerto soloist, recitalist and collaborative artist and has appeared at international festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival, Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and PianoEspoo. She is Head of Piano at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University. Following studies in her native Japan, Tomoe Kawabata moved to Australia in 2002. She has enjoyed an active international performing career with appearances in concerts and festivals in Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan. She is a member of the piano faculty at Monash University where she directs the piano duo program.
The Callisto Piano Duo brings together the talents and wide-ranging musical interests of pianists Nicholas Khong and Kavindra Widodo, both undergraduate pianists studying at Monash University. Callisto seeks to learn a diverse array of both four hands and two piano works, from Sergei Rachmaninoff and Elena Kats-Chernin to works that venture beyond the classical repertoire. Highlights for the duo since their formation in 2024 include winning the Monash Piano Duo Prize in 2024, performing at the ‘60 Years of Music at Monash’ celebration concert at Tempo Rubato in Melbourne, and playing live on 3MBS radio with fellow Monash University colleagues. They are mentored by Dr. Tomoe Kawabata through the piano duo program at Monash, and appear at Phoenix with the support of the KIAZMA Piano Duo mentoring program and the Industry Partnership program at Monash University.
