Anna Freer
LABYRINTH
Live at The Church
24 October 2026
LABYRINTH is a personal and a universal look at the mazes the seasons bring us into – living through winter to come out into spring. It’s essentially a personal recital, as I was hit particularly hard by the never-ending grey of Zurich winters over the last five years and found myself looking for the spring with both hope and desperation every year. The concert is this journey, told through the lens of poetry, music, and song.
About Anna Freer
Anna Freer is a violinist, singer, and writer. Born in Adelaide in 1997 and educated at the Elder Conservatorium, she relocated to Zürich, Switzerland in 2020 to undertake further studies at the ZHdK. During this time, she began to play the baroque violin and fell in love with historically informed performance practice, delving especially deep into the art of self-accompaniment (playing while singing!). She also began to create and perform narrative-based solo recitals, mixing original poetry and song with established classical music to tell personal stories, make all kinds of music have new conversations, and give audiences cohesive and moving concert experiences. In 2025, she became part of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble’s visionary training academy NOVA and has travelled across the world to give performances with the orchestra.
Now, Anna is based back in Australia, and enjoys a varied life where chamber music, solo recitals, orchestral playing, choir directing, and operating a small bar based on an old Adelaide poetry hoax is all mixed up. She is interested in bringing back our attention to nature, community, and joy, and is passionate about noticing and delighting in the world around us.
