Felix Bornholdt

Live at The Church

9 February 2025

Felix Bornholdt is a pianist and composer from Aotearoa New Zealand. A prolific improviser and pianist, Felix is a regular fixture in Sydney both as a solo artist and as part of the electronic trio Bike Thief. In 2023 he released his debut solo piano record, Man Overboard. Bornholdt's solo work is a typically antipodean melting pot; pop melodies sit alongside and inside longer, more abstract meditations; rhythmic figures reminiscent of jungle and breakbeat loops move across strange harmonies.

Bornholdt moved to Sydney in 2013, studying jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium and completing a thesis exploring ways in which elements of French composer Olivier Messaien's unique musical vocabulary could be incorporated into improvised works, particularly in the piano trio and solo piano format. For nearly eight years Bornholdt was a touring and recording member of Australian pop outfit Lime Cordiale and spent several years abroad touring in Europe, the UK and the United States. Now back in Sydney, Felix is working on several exciting Australia-based projects, scheduled for release in 2025.

Felix will be performing a selection of works from his 2023 solo piano record Man Overboard, as well as several new works.

This performance will take place at The Church.

The Church is a meticulously restored 19th-century Gothic church in Alexandria, NSW owned by Judith Neilson AM that houses rehearsals and work development for musicians by invitation.
