About Rachel Siu
Described as "fearless" by Yo-Yo Ma in an interview with South China morning post, Australian born Rachel Siu has been making her mark all around the world. She completed both her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees under the esteemed mentorship of Joel Krosnick at The Juilliard School, where she was a Kovner Fellow, and a recipient of the William Schuman Commencement Prize for outstanding leadership and achievement during her time at Juilliard. Her previous teachers include Peter Rejto and Susan Blake. 

Rachel’s career as a soloist commenced with a debut at the Sydney Town Hall at the age of seven. Since then, she has been internationally sought after as both a soloist and chamber musician, soloing with numerous orchestras, including the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, and The Juilliard Orchestra, working under the baton of conductors such as Thomas Adès, and Long Yu. She has frequented as a performer in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Sydney Opera House, Alice Tully Hall, Xinghai Concert Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and the Musikverein.

Rachel is also a recipient of many awards, more notably the Gold Medal prize at the VIII David Popper International Cello Competition in Hungary, and was the winner of The Juilliard School concerto competition in 2017. She was also a prize winner in the IX Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition in Mexico. Currently, Rachel is a recipient of the AMF Richard Bonynge Award. She is on the faculty at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music - University of Sydney, and is a part of Australia's own renowned Streeton Trio.

About Alexander Yau
Alexander Yau, an eminent young Australian pianist, has developed himself into a multifaceted musician incorporating his many musical talents as a chamber musician, conductor and composer. Pianist Balazs Szokolay describes "his artistic taste is good enough not to make any kind of "show" even in the most brilliant parts of great masterworks". 

His major concerto appearances as soloist include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Rachmaninoff’s Concerto no.3, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra with Rachmaninoff’s Concerto no. 1 and a major tour with the SBS Youth Orchestra in Australia, with Rachmaninov’s Concerto no. 2, concertos performances with the Festival Orchestra Sinfonica “Duchi d’Acquaviva” and the Budweis Philharmonic Orchestra, finally the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra with Brahms’ Piano Concerto no. 2. He has given solo and chamber music performances at the FOCUS Festival in Lincoln Centre NYC, Villa Reale and Teatre Commune di Atri in Italy,  locally in Troldhaugen (Grieg's home) in Bergen, Oslo Museum, Rexxam Hall in Takamatsu, as well as at the Australia International Canberra Music Festival, the Phoenix Central Park and City Recital Hall in Sydney. In 2022 he released his first album in collaboration with clarinettist Deborah de Graff, featuring his own compositions and works by other Australian composers.

He has been awarded numerous prizes such as 6th Prize at the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, 3rd Prize at the Teresa Carreno International Masters Piano Competition and special prizes at the Australian International Chopin Piano Competition. He was the winner of the Sydney Kawai Piano Scholarship, top prize winner of the Australian National Piano Award and the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition.

He is currently an Associate Lecturer of Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, a Casual Principal Pianist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and previously a music staff on contract at the Opera Australia. Previously he graduated his Masters of music from the renowned Juilliard School studying with prof. Matti Raekallio. He completed his Bachelor of Music piano performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, with first class Honours studying with Daniel Herscovitch and Elizabeth Powell.

Other than the piano, Alexander is an emerging young conductor. He studied conducting with Christopher Seamens and Jeffery Milarsky at the Juilliard School. He served as an assistant conductor for the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s Production of Madama Butterfly in 2023. He has assisted conductors such as Michelango Mazza, Carlo Montanaro, Brian Castles-Onion and Tahu Matheson and in Europe worked with Maestro George Pehlivanian and Norbert Baxa, on Puccini’s La Boheme and Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.

  • All performances at Phoenix Central Park are free.

  • Phoenix Central Park is an intimate performance space and tickets are limited. Due to high demand, tickets will be issued at random to those who have entered each ticket ballot. Each performance has a separate ballot, so if you would like to attend multiple performances, you will need to enter each ballot separately.

    We advise you to listen to the artist you are entering the ballot for, and consider which shows you’d really like to attend. Entering more ballots does not increase your chances of attending.
