Steve Barry x Alex Raupach

Live at The Church

6 November 2026

Composer-improvisers Alex Raupach and Steve Barry present new music for trumpet and piano, informed by a more than a decade of ensemble collaboration exploring each other's rich and beguiling harmonies, and original song forms that both twist and sing. In this set of pieces, Raupach and Barry appear for the first time in an intimate, expansive duo format – to pull apart each other’s compositions, and co-compose together in the moment in close-listening pin-drop music in the moment.

About Steve Barry
Steve Barry is a multi-award winning pianist, composer, improviser, and the Program Leader for Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Born and raised in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland and now living and creating on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia, Barry works across the music industry as a performer, accompanist, educator and consultant.

Hailed as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer-improvisers”, Barry’s work oscillates between contemporary jazz, art music, cross-cultural practice and musical theatre.

“...dazzling in his harmonic adventurousness, melodic resourcefulness, switchback rhythmic ideas and non-bombastic sense of drama.” — Sydney Morning Herald
