Effortlessly weaving together complex rhythms, soaring melodies and raw emotion, experimental jazz artist Freyja Garbett has captivated audiences across the globe with a unique sound that transcends genre and defies musical expectations. Incorporating elements of hip-hop and electronica to push the boundaries of traditional jazz on-stage, while fiercely advocating for female representation in the jazz world off-stage, Garbett's electrifying live performances and multi-faceted approach to experiential sound have cemented her place in the upper echelon of the Sydney jazz scene. With performances at Kuching Jazz Festival and SXSW under her belt, 2023 will see the development of Garbett's most recent immersive sound project 'Music from the Waves', a multi-movement suite combining electro-acoustic sonic palettes to encapsulate and audiate the synthesis between Garbett's two great loves, music and surfing.

‘Music from the Waves’ is an immersive journey through rich bio-sonic textures inspired by the ocean. The physical, mental and emotional link between musical improvisation and surfing are concepts that have long been pondered by musicians and lovers of waves. Many surfers have drawn a philosophical connection between these disciplines. In collaboration with Elk Electronic, Freyja has developed a motion sensor to collect the data of her movements while surfing. This data has become the source material for a series of original compositions and improvisation as she and her band “surf the changes”.
