Hamed Sadeghi: Shur شور — "Zarbi Shur" | Live at Phoenix

Shur شور brings together a Persian classical ensemble, led by Iranian-Australian composer and tar virtuoso Hamed Sadeghi with vocalist Ramin Etemadzadeh, kamancheh player Sina Bastami and percussionist (tombak and daf) Amirsalar Makhzani. Directed by Sydney filmmaker Hyun Lee (French Girls), the film offers a contemporary portrait of the quartet performing "Zarbi Shur", a tansif composed in Shur mode, with alternating vocal and instrumental passages set to a seven-beat rhythm. 'Zarbi' refers to its rhythmic form, while the lyrics draw from Persian classical poetry, speaking to longing and devotion.

In Farsi, ‘Shur’ carries a double meaning: it refers to one of the principal dastgāh, or modal systems, of Persian classical music, while also evoking passion and intensity. Spanning regions from Mazandaran in the north to Lorestan in the west, and from Kurdish to Khorasani traditions, the ensemble brings distinct regional lineages into a shared practice grounded in improvisation and the oral transmission of Persian classical music, where composed structures and spontaneous exchange continually inform one another.
