MEMORIALS — "Lamplighter"

A driving krautrock sensibility underpins “Lamplighter”, the latest single from Electrelane’s Verity Susman and Wire’s Matthew Simm who are together, MEMORIALS. Even for musicians as accomplished, it’s no less impressive to watch the duo deftly play multiple instruments in one sitting for Live at Phoenix, sustaining momentum amidst the whirlwind. A poignant, Caretaker-esqe soundscape produced by a custom-made tape machine mellotron, sets the perfect scene for a song that has a pop visage and a darker interior, with Susman’s lyrics drawing from an existential letter written by Fanny Burneym contemplating her fading youth. Meanwhile, director Alena Lodkina weaves double exposures right before our eyes, evoking the fleeting nature of experience and indeed, the passage of time.
