Simon Barker x Hinano Fujisaki — "Terrains of Transition"

Simon Barker and Hinano Fujisaki’s Live at Phoenix film, ‘Terrains of Transition’, directed by Georgia Brogan, draws from their latest release ‘Tymbal Echoes’—a project that explores the intricate, ever-shifting sonics of Barker and Fujisaki’s collaboration. Performed within The Nest, the piece is shaped by the organic unpredictability of the natural world, channelling the restless energy of cicadas, flowing streams, and flickering firelight.

Across Barker’s shifting percussion and Fujisaki’s fluid saxophone, sound emerges in constant motion—overlapping, fragmenting, and reforming. Rather than building toward resolution, their performance remains suspended, holding space for instability and transformation. The music moves at a pace outside familiar time signatures, guided instead by the unfixed rhythms of the environment it draws from.

Brogan’s direction mirrors this approach, pairing pared-back, intimate visuals with abstracted 16mm footage by Estelle Yoon. The film resists definitive narrative, instead offering fleeting visual impressions—fragments of space, movement, and light that echo the music’s elusive structure.
