Huda the Goddess and Reuben Lewis meet in “Story of Another Soul” in this Live at Phoenix film, directed by Sydney-based filmmaking duo Baro Lee and Gerard Cabellon.

A spoken-word odyssey, "Story of Another Soul" moves through memory, love, ancestry, displacement and selfhood. Huda’s poetry draws from written and improvised material, while Reuben’s trumpet and live electronics create a sonic world in dialogue with her voice. Through improvisation, the two artists respond to one another in real time, allowing the work to shift and take form as it unfolds. The film documents this exchange as it happens in real time.

Speaking on the unique nature of their collaboration, Huda says: “If we’re having a conversation, and his trumpet interrupts my talking, and my talking interrupts his trumpet – we’re not out of sync, we’re both telling the truth at the exact. This is a two artist conversation that is about honouring the truth, even if it interrupts the lie you’ve told yourself.”
